[DM-MUG] how do I disable sharing in Leopard?

I have a DSL modem plugged into an Airport Extreme base station. It is WPA2 encrypted. My Macbook has airport turned on and saw another person's computer. If I disable airport and use an ethernet cable, that person's computer doesn't show up. Would it not be the wireless detection of my Macbook that picked up on it?
I watch my DSL modem's lights religiously. They never blink unless I'm doing something, so I don't think I'm being hijacked.
