Please clarify: 10.5 *is* Leopard. Are you updating from 10.4? 10.3?

Backing up the user folder(s) will get your desktop, mail (from
Mail.app, Thunderbird or Entourage), iPhoto & iTunes libraries, and so
on. You'll also want to back up anything you created on the root of
the drive. Some, but not all, applications can be backed up too;
Adobe, Microsoft and Quark titles tend not to be quite so friendly.

Honestly, if you're installing Leopard anyway (and will be gaining
Time Machine in the process), this would be an excellent time to
purchase an external HD anyway. You can use it and SuperDuper (free
trial at ShirtPocket.com) to make an excact clone of your HD before
you install Leopard. Then your safety is virtually guaranteed.

This is usually the best approach, *if* you have a reliable backup
(including all apps, library files, user accounts and so on). But that
reliable backup virtually requires an external HD. It keeps coming
back to: you really should consider an external HD.
