BTW I did also post this Q on MacOSXHints and it was suggested to run 
OmniDiskSweeper also to see what is there, which reported the same as 
WhatSize.. someone gave me a terminal command also, which resulted in 
the same -- but after all that, I looked again and it was back to 19G 
full...the guy at MacOSXHints said ==  so apparently, the Diskwarrior 
fixed the problem...good to know.

You've got 770 Megabytes of space occupied by a Spotlight index on that drive.

As for the explanation of why it changed from 11 Gigabytes used into 
less than 1 Gigabyte used on the drive, perhaps you have some 
filesystem damage that Disk Utility or DiskWarrior repaired?
