Well, if you didn't know by now that Apple's memory prices are insane,
I have to wonder where you've been keeping yourself. I always buy
stock and then upgrade w/ good quality 3rd party RAM anyway. That
would be true online as well.
Actually they probably wanted the appointment to slot a time for the
Genius to install the memory. As I said, even in notebooks (iirc) RAM
has been an officially "User Replaceable Part" for some time now (at
least it's not the Plus/SE/Classic days when upgrading RAM meant close
personal encounters w/ flyback transformers).
I'll admit I haven't bought a mac there since I bought my G5, but even
back then they were pretty limited to the set configs they had on the
floor, and you either had to have them install upgrades or go online
for custom stuff.
