• Find your iTunes Music folder in [your hard drive] > Users > [your
user folder] > Music > iTunes. Drag it to the external drive and then
delete the old folder's contents (i.e., move them to the trash and
empty the trash.)
• Move your iTunes Library file to the "Previous iTunes Libraries"
folder. Please note: iTunes will forget everything you've ever had in
your iTunes Library (including music, podcasts, movies, TV shows,
playlists, and folders). We'll import your *content* back in, in steps
to follow, but your playlists and folders will be gone.
• Open iTunes and panic only briefly when you see that it's empty. Go
to the "iTunes" menu and select Preferences. Click the "Advanced" tab.
Click the "General" tab. In the space for "iTunes Music Folder
location," click the "Change" button. Direct the minifinder to the
copy of your iTunes Music folder on the external drive and click
"Open." iTunes will now use this folder when you download from the
iTunes Store or import music from your CDs.
• Go to the "File" menu and select Add to Library. Direct the
minifinder to the same folder on the external drive and click "Open."
iTunes will now add all the files from the iTunes Music folder into
the Library.
• It's going to be up to you to re-create all your old playlists,
folders, smart playlists, etc. When you connect your iPod at this
point, it should sync normally, unless you had it set to sync to a
particular playlist. If that's the case, you may need to tweak its
preferences too.
