I once bought a slideshow program to let me go into full screen view of a folder of images in the Finder before I realized that OS X had the ability built-in. :)

I once wrote command line scripts to gzip and AES encrypt folders before realizing Disk Utility could make encrypted disk images for me.

I had once made a 40 floppy disk backup of my Amiga's hard drive without checking if all the disks were error free. I reformatted and repartitioned my hard drive and started the restoration process. Disk #23 had errors on it and the restore failed. I lost years of writing, email, pictures etc.
