[DM-MUG] How do I tell what's running on my computer if I can't see it?

Look at Utilities:Activity Monitor

There will be a lot of stuff running you won't know about or
understand, so it might be difficult to figure out what is going on,
and your machine does run many tasks on an ongoing basis that you
have no need to be aware of normally - one that springs to mind is
the process that keeps Spotlight updated. If you've been downloading
a bunch of new files, it's possible some of that is spotlight pouring
over it to index it's contents.
