[DM-MUG] iMovie Question

I was hoping to figure this out myself but I have a problem that I need some
help with. I've been using iMovie to import and create movies from our
digital camera. This has worked fairly well with a few glitches now and then.
But, I've discovered that a couple of iMovie videos have imported a few fairly
large files that I now need to split. iMovie does not seem to be able to
actually do this. I thought that when you cropped a video clip it would
actually the decrease the video size but it doesn't. It just makes the video
inaccessible to iMovie. The original file remains untouched. Is there a utility that
can actually go in to a dv file and split it into smaller files. I realize
that I could go back and reimport clips, and making smaller files but since I
would have to do this in real time I was hoping for a faster way. Is the
video that iMovie creates so proprietary that no other software can touch it?

So why do I need to have smaller files- I bought another external backup
drive from Seagate (I would not recommend the Western Digital MyBook at this
time). Because I want to use the drive with both PC's and our Mac, I am forced to
use the old ugly DOS FAT32 format. Obviously, a big drawback to this
terrible decision is the "no file larger than 4GB" size problem. I've since
discovered that I have several files that are over 5 GB from my video importing. I
can watch this problem in the future. Most of the time camera files are much
shorter than the 4 GB limit because we don't normally have the camera
recording continuously. If I can't figure out a good solution to this problem I'll
have to reformat the external backup drive to the normal Mac standard.
