I think you've got it. I mean that if you've got 500 documents, figure out how to break it down into 5 different folders so that there's only a 100 being displayed at any one time. This of course affects icon preview mode only. List view is always rocket fast.

I do this with my applications folder too, which seems to be the folder that takes the longest to display on time vs. file quantity. I've created folders like:

-Games (WoW, Diablo II etc.)
-Internet (Firefox, Unison, Transmit, Skype, Acquisition etc.)
-Graphics (PSE, GraphicConverter, Omnigraffle etc.)
-Media  (Real, SWF Player, VLC, DivX etc.)
