[DM-MUG] backing up photos, and fetching

I love to use iPhoto for everyday photo collection/organizing, and
use it to backup photos to DVD.
I often find myself needing to go back into a backed up disc to fetch
a photo, and it's the most time consuming thing to do. iPhoto is so
slow displaying a page of thumbnails off a DVD, that I often have to
sit there waiting 3-5 seconds between pagedowns, and a half hour can
go by before I find the photo.
Once a page is rendered once though, it gets cached and it becomes as
quick as if it was on the hard drive.
Is there a way to get iPhoto to read the backup faster, or cache the
whole thing without me having to pagedown, wait 3 seconds, page down,
wait 3 seconds etc. ?
I've tried using iView for speed because its catalog approach works
brilliantly for scrolling through a backup set, but for some reason
every time I do a burn and tell it to include the catalog on the
backup disc, the catalog created is burned still pointing to the
original content on the hard drive. So once I clean up the hard disc
and go fetching on the backup in the future, using the burned copy of
the catalog, it can't find the photos.
I've tried managing the catalogs on the hard drive so I can find
items/reset paths and have it point to a backup CD, but it can't
reset paths when two filenames are the same. It also crashes a lot
when trying to update the location of images in a catalog so I can't
make any further progress with it.
