[DM-MUG] problem erasing external Western Digital 60G drive

I have 60G external Western Digital drive that I'm trying to 
erase/initialize to Mac HFS extended Journaled and it's not letting 
me do it =-= it hangs when the 'partition' bar is 1mm across...I've 
tried this twice and let it run for many minutes...I also sent 
support at WDC the Q, since this is precisely what they say to do, 
but wondered if someone here had a better and faster answer.
