Ray,
In order to digitize the video from your Son's Hi-8 recorder he will need an
adapter that will accept RCA cable connections and essentially convert the
analog signal to a digital format.
In order to determine which adapter to look at your son needs to know
exactly how he wants to host the end product. Some of the cheaper adapters
digitize directly to a low grade Mpeg-1 or Mpeg-2 format that I personally
find unacceptable. Other adapters allow a multitude of capture formats up
to and including lossless formats that create enormous file sizes.
My personal favorite is the DV format that equates to about 13 GB per hour
of captured video. The DV format is great for editing and can be easily
converted to Mpeg-2 for mastering to DVD.
Ray, I do this type of work at home and have all of the necessary hardware
to transfer analog video to digital formats including the latest compression
algorithms such as H.264/Mp4/Ipod, Windows Media v9, and standard DVD-ROM.
