Of course, you haven't stated whether or not you're using OS 9 or X,  
or what version, but I believe the stall being related to online  
updates is a bogus answer, especially under OS X. Unless the prefs  
file or update code is corrupted, it's not likely to stall for that  
reason in my exp. Have you considered re-installing from the original  
disc? That's the best way to ensure it's not the app. Pshop uses  
virtual memory quite a bit and most users I encounter rarely have  
enough memory to optimally use the app. For this reason it frequently  
pages data to the hard drive and under both OS 9 and X, it will  
upchuck if the directory is hosed. Run a good directory optimizer  
(Alsoft's Disk Warrior is a great choice), dump the prefs, and  
proceed from there.
