[DM-MUG] How to reformat a travel drive

I have a USB travel drive and need to reformat it to empty it out and 
copy new stuff to it but on trying to use Disk Utility it is greyed 
out, can't Erase by selecting either the actual drive or the name 
under it in the list on the left.  I have tried to both ignore and 
not ignore ownership and to reset the owners, no dice [keep getting 
error 195 which doesn't solve the problem] - it is not locked and the 
Get Info says it is read and writable but I can't do anything with it 
== how can I get it  back to writable shape as if new???  Thanks.
