Folder actions are a way of making an applescript automatically occur
when the contents of a folder change. As an example, the script that
Bryan mentions will alert you when the contents of the folder it is
attached to changes. It could be potentially modified to look up a
widget from an online source to see if it is safe. If it is not, it
could then move the file to a quarantine folder, alert you, wash your
car, and dance a jig.
However, this particular script merely alerts you of any change.
