One comment is that Spotlight is always indexing the drive. When you
are writing something, downloading something, changing and image, it
will be indexing. I expect that it does wait until the file is
written to disk. My understanding is that the System folder is not
indexed. Using Spotlight to find Automator turned up a lot of things
but not the Automator folder in System > Library.
On my initial install the 12 Gs I have on the HD were indexed within
a couple of minutes.
