[DM-MUG] Figuring out what is going on in background in Tiger...

I'm sitting here working on my computer [Cube souped up per Matt = 
excellently tho] and keep hearing little bips that tell me something 
is processing in background.  I opened Activity Monitor to see what 
it was and whether I should stop it.  First off I'm not sure which 
number is most important:  %CPU, Threads, Real or Virtual Memory. 
Then, things keep moving up and down [right now it's in sort by % CPU 
mode] --  it was really going there for awhile but has calmed 
down....is there a place that wll explain this to me?

And what is mdimport, which seems to come to top alot.
