Yes, the feature of Disk Utility with which one can clone a disk
partition is not obvious, but like you, I figured it out rather quickly.

I cloned the primary Mac OS X 10.3.9 partition on my Dual 2GHz Power
Mac G5 to a secondary partition on the same drive (after archiving
some large files and stuff that made the primary too large to fit on
the secondary. I too booted from the cloned partition, which booted
fine (until after installing Tiger).

Note that prior to cloning partitions, I did a full backup of the
primary partition onto an external FireWire drive using CCC. In the
future I will try using Disk Utility to clone onto an external drive,
since CCC does not currently support Tiger. I might use SuperDuper!.

One odd thing is that Disk Utility changed the name of the cloned
partition to the name of the partition being cloned. I changed the
name back before rebooting.

Once I had cloned my primary Mac OS X 10.3.9 partition on my PM, I
used it to Migrate (after an Erase and Install) to my 500MHz Titanium
PowerBook G4. Strangely, after installing Tiger and Migrating my
system and users (but not applications and folders) from the PM via
FireWire, my AirPort would not connect! The name and password
appeared to be there, but would not work until I retyped the same
password, after which it worked fine. I did not have this problem
when I Migrated from the cloned partition on the PM to the primary
partition on the PM after doing an Erase and Install. Strange.

Both machines, however, required that I re-enter my MediaCom e-mail
passwords before I could send messages!

After installing Tiger on the PM, I tried to reboot into Panther on
the secondary partition, but it hung at the login window with an
Alert panel behind it, which I could not access, because the computer
hand hung (for the first time ever) with the mouse cursor frozen in
the upper left corner and the name of some Bluetooth application in
the menu bar (which should not be present when the login panel is
displayed). This is even more strange since I have never turned on
Bluetooth, since I have no Bluetooth devices (but BTO'd it anyway for
the future).

Otherwise, everything seems to be working perfectly and I have not
had any trouble of any kind since.
