Just to chime in with our experience.

We have a three year old iBook for my wife and are basically happy
with it. We recently took it in a train trip to the West Coast to
download pictures and retrieve email and were very happy with it. I
found it a good solution to our needs.

None of Darcy's problems but the optical drive has been replaces
twice under Apple protection and there is a problem which we can't
seem to pin down.
