[DM-MUG] Apple moving to Intel - confirmed by Jobs at WWDC

A point that may not have been addressed yet in this forum:

The problem has never been, necessarily, the Intel/AMD vs. Motorola/IBM
chips. All are excellent processors if used with decent operating systems.

The problem is, and always has been IMHO, that the Windows operating system,
although inferior to the Mac OS since Windows' introduction in 1987, is
being passed off as a better product -- and that the uninformed masses
believe it to be true.

Some users and even businesses are beginning to wake up to Windows'
failings, and are beginning to look for alternatives. And one alternative
they have right now, for their existing equipment, is Linux. It's
Unix-based, rock solid, and has fewer security and integrity problems. But
there aren't enough programs available for Linux, and there is a perception
that a Linux-based business will have compatibility problems with the larger
Windows-based share of the business world (sound familiar?).

Actually, I see Linux as a more important competitor to Apple even than
Windows. Eventually, more and more people will become frustrated enough
with Windows to make a move to another platform. Linux becomes a serious
problem on Apple's radar screen.

As good as Motorola and IBM processors have been to Apple, there have always
been problems with R&D and production. Processor speeds have lagged behind
since at least the Pentium I days. A move to Intel (maybe AMD?) processors
truly evens out the playing field.

On the other hand, given the fact that Mac OS uses its processor(s) more
efficiently than does Windows (1 GHz Mac outperforms 2 GHz Wintel), imagine
the possibilities when Steve is able to use an apples-to-apples comparison
(no pun intended). Megahertz Myth nothin'. Mac OS will stomp Windows' ass!

Truth is, I know my next computer (actually my next 10 computers) will be
Macs. I love the OS, I love the product, and I love sticking it to Bill
Gates. I'm excited to see how this whole thing plays out.

Peace,
CW
