I wasreading various comments last nite too - someone pointed out
that the life of a computer these days [not our Macs of course but in
terms of warranty etc.] is only 3 yrs -- so even if you bought a G5
now [maybe cheaper than normal given this move] and kept it - it
would still work in 2007-08 and beyond and the new chipped machines
won't really be out til then anyway....this is not too much different
than when Apple moved to OSX and let Classic survive and prosper and
continue to run == though that has now, finally, ended....but folks
with Classic programs and machines still run them just fine...not
everyone needs the newest and greatest --
except business enterprise - businesses turn over machines yearly or
biyearly it seems [WIN of course] - maybe the stability and
cross-platform ability of the new OSX will allow Apple to move more
into business enterprises - after all, we all pay higher taxes
individually because business take tax writeoffs to maximize
profits...maybe businesses wouldn't be able to justify the computer
turnover so much??
I think Matt is right, it's a business decision plain and simple and
not much different than deciding to create a new OS and leave 9 in
the dust at some point.
