Hey,
OK, demoing Spotlight - results are grouped by type of item. It is very
fast, and the indexing is very deep - pulling text right out of PDFs.
Note, this is not using metadata - this is actually finding the text
inside the pdf. The results of a search can be images - which are
previewed right in the pane. WOW! It crashed! Jobs smoothly just
switches to a backup machine and continues. Now he's showing spotlight
in the preferences panel. The relevant prefs pane are highlighted. He
shows a quick thing where the mac will make a screen saver from your
album art.
Next demo is for Mail
Spotlight is integrated. they added a slideshow button. The demo mac
has 100,000 emails. The searching is instantaneous. Nice clean colored
gui for the spotlight stuff. The slideshow will do what you might thing
- it will do a slideshow of multiple images from the same email. oh
niiiice - you can save the files right out of the slide show and there
is a nifty animation that shows the file sucking down into iPhoto. So,
some really nice image integration in the new Mail.
Next - Quicktime 7. The most major QT upgrade in a decade.
330 million downloaded + 10s of millions bundled with other products.
New - full surround sound, full screen overlay controls, Complete MPEG
4 compliance, HD playback. The big thing, he says, is H.264. Best video
codec in the world. Has been adopted for high def DVDs (both BlueRay
and HDDVD). Now demoing that by plaing a mofvie. Very smooth scaling.
No huge GUI changes in the player. The codec is scalable from cell
phones up to High Def.
Dashboard - this is the thing that is kinda like the Konfabulator.
Dashboard is designed to hold and display widgets - small one trick
pony apps. Showing address book, itunes controller, converter for
units, dictionary, stock tracker, flight tracker, translation, yellow
pages, stickies, weather, etc. Pretty AMAZING. Demoing this now.
Widgets appear just like expose does. New widgest appear from a
dock-like thing at the bottom of the screen. New widgets make cool
waves on the screen when they are placed. The translation widget does
it while you type.
more to come...
