Both. Generally the download spd. is the most important for
residential users. But as you've found, the need for a fast upload
becomes important if you want to host or participate in a bandwidth-
intensive service, such as video chat, file sharing, high-volume Web
hosting, uploading files to your DotMac account, or online gaming.
The minimum upload speed for iChat AV *initiating* is 384kbps and
participating is 100kbps. Most 1.5 Mbps DSL services in our area will
do 1.5 down and 800+ up. With DSL you are also not directly competing
with nearby cable households (users on your cable LAN) for bandwidth,
rather the entire pipe that your ISP provides which is a little
harder to fill up.
