Seagate is but ONE manf. of drives with a 5-year warranty. Western
Digital also sells drives with 5-year warranties. I believe Samsung
has a 5-year. There are many choices now from 1-5. You get what you
pay for.
I have seen all drives fail, but Seagate seems to be the current
opinion favorite. I won't buy a drive without at least a 3-year
warranty. I've dealt with Seagate and Western Digital and in each
case of failure, the replacement process was very simple. This is a
valuable component of the warranty that gets missed. Can you actually
replace the drive easily?
Most PC manf's save money by purchasing cheaper, lower-quality drives
from lots that have a poor yield ratio and they often go bad in a
year or two. Traditionally, a REAL reason why Apple boxes cost more
is because they chose higher-quality lots that passed more QA tests.
I don't know if this is still true.
