No squeamishness here, and I can probably avoid SN problems by grabbing 
/Library/Application Support, as that's where we (developers) are expected
to store serial numbers and the like. I suppose I'd also backup 
/Library/Preferences for global settings (Airport, print settings, etc). In
both cases, I think I'd take a bit more care when restoring from these folders.

Permissions? I've never bothered with them, so I'm not concerned there.

I'm all for saving money, but I don't think I'm going to do better than $30 
for 80 GB. If I can find a 5400 larger than 10 GB for next to nothing, I'd
jump on it, especially if I can avoid the hassle of rebates.
