Actually I did a long list, but it was many months ago = current
thinking on the MacLaw list [lawyers and they really need security
and backup!!! times three!] is as follows - the idea being to clone
the drive, not to just copy over
CCC - but it freezes and I'm like Matt, I don't use it any more,
though I do have it sitting on the machine
REtrospect - expensive and proprietary = I've been using it since
early 1990s without incident. But probably will try to move to
something else some day.
MimMac - I have it and have used it and was very pleased with it - shareware
SuperDuper is highly regarded - it will Clone then will restart from
the new clone so you'll know if it's okay or not = I did have it not
work about a week ago, but have not tracked it down and don't think
you need to take that as a negative...
Synchronize Pro X - works well for several folks

I use it and like it. For me, SuperDuper makes a bootable copy of my
office hard drive onto a 3.5" 250 GB HD; I also use it to backup my
AlPB onto a 2.5" 80 GB HD. The only downside is you can't store other
data on the hard drive without partitioning because it will erase any
files not on your source drive. I use ProSoft Engineering's DataBackUp
for network backup and it appears to work fast and accurately (and will
run in the background).
I love SuperDuper.
After dumping Retrospect several years ago, and having CCC freeze
and/or produce backups which failed to mount, I find SD to be simple,
fast and dependable.
For its "grand finale" in cloning your hard disk, it restarts your
computer from the clone, so you know immediately that you have a
BOOTABLE backup before you leave the backup process. This is neat, and
provides peace of mind that if you need that backup, it won't
disappoint you. I could do that manually of course from other programs,
but the temptation would be too great to skip checking.
