[DM-MUG] OS X drag and drop

My brother in law has been told by Apple service to reinstall  his OS 
on a G5 to try to solve some problems which are making it unusable. 
He is trying to backup his data  using Target Disk Mode.  He is using 
drag-and-drop. I believe the OS is 10.3. Will he have trouble with 
the data from the users directory being usable if he needs it or is 
this all right? Could he drag and drop to a second HD on the G5?    I 
would tend to think that a backup program such as Apple Backup or CCC 
would be safer.
