You don't have a FireWire port? 1st Gen iPods didn't even connect via 
USB, only FW. You just need a std. FW cable and a 6-6 pin powered FW 
port. FW cards for Windows are shockingly inexpensive.

The 1st Gen iPods had an actual moving wheel and buttons that circled 
the wheel and was FW only.
2nd Gen iPods had a trackpad-like wheel that did not move.
3rd Gen iPods had 4 buttons in a row above the wheel and came with a 
dock, I believe USB compatibility was introduced here.
4th Gen iPods & Mini's have a single wheel that serves as the button 
and also come with a dock.

An iPod should charge if it is connected to a 6-pin powered FW port. If 
it doesn't work on the PC, try restoring settings:
