[DM-MUG] wierd little spinning circle in my menu?

I have repaired permissions and restarted a few times (for other 
reasons) but on the top right of the menu bar is a little grey 
spinning circle - one of those ones that is not solid but a series of 
spokes running round and round....I don't know where it came from and 
can't get it to stop.  It won't be clicked upon to tell me what it is 
for.

Any way to tell from various logs or other such what it is from???
