I have a 233 Mhz iMac still running 8.1 that is use only for quicken.
(Things worked so well back then.)
I had this same problem a while back and it is common problem with part of
the power supply.
What I did to work around this was to take the cover off the bottom of the
iMac and on the back of the motherboard is a DB-15 video connector that
you can remove. With out video single going to internal monitor then the
monitor does not power up. This save the power supply problem. I then
hooked up an external monitor and it has been running fine for more then a
year.
Slightly off topic: the iMac is unfortunately the only mac I have in my
normal home arsenal with a couple PC's. I found a PS/2 to USB adpater that
is Mac compatible so I am using a PS/2 (PC keyboard/mouse) through a
PS2/VGA KVM switch (Keyboard, video, mouse switch) to run 2 PC's and the
iMac with only one set of monitor/keyboard/mouse.
just my 2 cents
