Actually, this is not the entire story...

USB 2 is 460Mbps BURST.  What that means is that it occasionally 
attains 460, but averages much lower.

Firewire (400 or 800) reports the bus' sustained speed.  So you get the 
400 or 800Mbps as an average speed.

What this results in is that Firewire is a faster interface, which 
Intel attempted to take down with the FUD for USB2.
