Yellow box was never a Windows Emulator. However, it would be killer
for Apple to fully release YB.
In the original Rhapsody, there was Yellow box, Blue box, and an
unconfirmed Red box.
Blue box is classic. Yellow box is Cocoa. Finally, Red box was
dreamed up as a Windows Emulator built into the OS.
The reason that you were confused is because of the product Yellow Box
for Windows, which was never released.
YB4W made it so anything you wrote in Cocoa would be instantly portable
to Windows with a simple recompile. Same source, two compilations,
packaged together as one executable. If Apple ever released YB4Win, we
could drag TextEdit from a Mac to a Windows machine, and run it.
This is different than java, as java is a runtime environment, which
means that to run a java app, the computer must take a major hit to
convert it to an architecture.
Developers would be able write software once, and market it for all
platforms without a slowdown for being a universal executable. I would
imagine that dropping this was part of the whole 100 Million dollar
investment in Apple, as it was around the same timeframe.
