The story thus far:
Two weeks ago the screen on my iBook 700 (white, dual USB, FireWire) went black and I
couldn't seem to get picture from it no matter how hard I tried. I knew the system was
running because I could access my drives over my AirPort network. I backed up files,
tried resetting the PMU and PRAM to no avail, then looked at Apple's website from
another computer (remember, my 700 had no screen) and found that this was a symptom
of the screwy logic board that had been recalled. GREAT! I rushed my iBook to a
certified Apple tech for the trip to Cupertino to have the logic board replaced.
Within the week, Apple returned my iBook, in working order, but had not replaced the
logic board. They had instead replaced the power inverter, which they said was causing
my screen to sleep inappropriately. Hey, whatever it takes to get back to work, right?
Exactly one week after I picked up my iBook, the entire machine went to sleep and WILL
NOT WAKE UP. Sure, I can press the space bar and (usually) wake it up for a few
seconds, but not long enough to actually DO anything. When I force it to shut down and
reboot, it falls asleep just as the boot sequence is ending.
When I boot in FireWire mode, I can see the screen for about 1/4 second, and can
transfer data. This made me and the aforementioned certified tech think it might be a
system-related problem. He recommended I boot from the OS X disc and reinstall. I did,
and 3/4 way through the reinstall (before I was prompted to insert CD 2), the damn thing
went to sleep AGAIN.
I tried booting from the OS 9 disc. If it's OS X related, I should be able to boot in OS 9,
right? I get through the boot sequence just fine, but immediately after the drives show up
on the desktop, BOOM! Asleep again. Apparently, this problem is NOT system related.
Please don't reccomend I repair permissions or use Disk Utility, 'cuz I can't see the
damned screen to try these fixes.
I'm afraid to boot another machine from my iBook drive for fear I might have two Apple
paperweights instead of just the one.
Has anyone else experienced a similar problem? What was the solution? Should I send
it back to Apple and insist Steve Jobs himself replace the logic board? HELP ME! HELP
ME! HELP ME!
Peace,
CW
