[DM-MUG] Poping monitor

My son-in-law just called about a monitor which started a sequence of 
a pop, the image grows larger and darker, then it repeats several 
times. Then it settles down for a while and repeats. There seems to 
be no smell so I would tend to rule out arcing. This came with a used 
G3 I bought him a couple of years ago.

Any guesses about the problem? I have a few and don't like them.
