There *was* a firmware "issue" with Apple a few years ago, but it was
(for the most part?) resolved. RAM vendors had to make sure their
memory met certain requirements and Apple was merely checking for that
(even if it worked fine not meeting those requirements). There were
patches on the 'net you could use to "reprogram" certain RAM, sorta, to
be recognized, and most RAM vendors at the time started making sure
their RAM read properly for Apples.
I don't remember many details, but I'm surprised you'd find RAM today
that was not recognized. I do know, at the time, a big stink was
raised 'cause systems that worked fine suddenly did not recognize RAM
after the update.
A net search should lead to a few pages that were made back then
dealing with how you could upgrade RAM to be recognized.
Sorry I don't recall specifics. I do remember dealing with this before
I ordered RAM for one of my systems back then.
