[DM-MUG] HDTV shopping in DSM

Counterpoint: I used to think that too. Consumer electronic products
are no longer made with reliability in mind. The big brands would much
rather sell me a new one in 2-4 years anyway. With a big TV I'd prefer
to have longer coverage, for example, the perk of the vendor coming out
to pick it up free of charge if it fails. Ever try to lift a 34-inch
tube TV by yourself? Don't. I expect to keep a TV for 7+ years. I don't
trust the current crop of HD stuff to last that long. Plus, if I ever
sell my HD set prematurely, the buyer feels better knowing that there
is some coverage.

Now, I'm not going to write off a vendor because it doesn't sell
extended warranties, but it is a plus in my book if they do. My first
buying experience was at an attractive price point, but it had no
warranty beyond a year. I had to write to a magazine to get the
manufacturer to accept a return after 7 months and 3 attempted repairs
(they finally picked it up on their dime). I doubt they would have done
that without my scathing commentary to the chief editor of the mag
whose review I trusted. This was a lucky break and within the 1-year.
What would have happened after 3 more months? Ext. warranties have
their value. BTW, the local company (no names) wouldn't take the flawed
set back.
