Clean install is the way to go here. It keeps all the apps in place but 
some prefs may have to be rebuilt (or carefully brought over in small 
groups from the old sys folder and tested). 9.1 is a good OS to settle 
upon, but I'd have recommended using Explorer instead of AOL's browser 
and you'd have probably taken care of your problem right there.

You did check the directory and clear the PRAM, right? Some port info 
is stored in the PRAM. Turning of AppleTalk, or switching it to Remote 
Only (AppleTalk Control Panel) might help too.

I'd offer help in person, but I'm booked solid two weeks out right now.
