haven't tried using this exchange before, hope i'm using the correct 
address and not bothering anyone.

looking for legacy expertise.

gave my old g3 desktop to an elderly friend several years ago.
she's on dial-up with aol.

recently, aol stopped displaying web pages correctly on her machine.
someone at the maccentral forum suggested updating her os from 9.0 to 
9.1., then uninstalling aol and reinstalling it.
so i made a cd with the 9.1 update.  got that done.
did the aol uninstall/install from one of their promo disks.

now i can't get her connected to aol again.

dialog box says something like "port in use by another app"
finder shows no other apps running.

an aol tech took me through trying to reach the modem through remote 
access.
same dialog.

i've turned the modem (globalvillage v90 56k) off and on.
i've tried the printer port and the modem port, resetting aol correctly 
for each attempt.

aol tech says to call apple and have them guide me through some kind of 
internal reconfiguration of ports.

after spending all morning with aol techs. it occurred to me to try 
here rather than apple.

if anyone here really knows and remembers this kind of stuff, and has 
an extra hour to make a house call, i'll pay (be gentle in your 
pricing.  single teacher here giving up resources regularly to help 
this old lady - like paying for her aol).
