Thanks for the help == I am trying to NOT have an OS9 scanner...and 
to be able to have a scanner and color printer all in one = dont' 
need true multifunction = this is a 2nd machine so if it does go for 
repair (these days things are so cheap it's less expensive to replace 
than repair) that won't be a problem = I know Epson comes highly 
rated...

By the way, a really neat scanner is the HP 4670 - it sits 
vertically/diagonally - looks really spiffy.  Not that it'd be the 
one to get, but it is a neat design.
