Actually, I used a configuration like this for years
using both hardware routers and Linux routers. The
speed isn't any slower than running a single dial up
connection unless you are downloading something as
about 90% of the time your connection is idle.
If you want to speed up web browsing a bit, you can
run squid. Squid is a background application that
caches Web requests from web browsers so that the next
request for the same content will come from the cache
machine rather than the connection. This differs from
your web browser's built-in cache in that it is shared
between all computers that use it, and it is faster
than most web browser caches, especially browsers on
OS 9 and earlier.

Setting up squid requires issuing a few UNIX commands
and editing a well-commented configuration file. Once
it is set up, it works quite well. If you need help
with installing squid, there are a few people on this
list with the skills necessary to do this who would
probably be willing to help.
