You are correct, that there is a free "lite" version that is able to do
up to 8 tracks on OS 9. http://digidesign.com/ptfree/ Since JD mailed
me offline that he's still running 9, that might be a really good place
to start, but like crack, even though "the first hit's free" in the
long run Digi's products are the high-end (and from all reports "back
in the day" I think they subbed their customer relations people from
Quark) ;-) From the looks of things, they may have been able to bring
their stuff down to reality a bit, but I'm still shy about them.

For myself, I'm now looking for something that I can use in OSX,
probably equal Audio/MIDI and that doesn't get in the way creatively -
at the moment MOTU's looking good to me, but some of that is the fact
that I cut my teeth on their MIDI products. I still like Deck a lot for
pure Audio editing, but I'm thinking it's MIDI is too limited for my
tastes now (plus, it's been so long that I'll be pretty much buying
new). I may look into the newest version of Metro, since I have used
that, but it keeps jumping from publisher to publisher.
