[DM-MUG] Register's piece on laptops in DM Schools.... and
others?

Being someone who used to work for the district, I can tell you that the Director of Technology is 100% behind Dells and he and his staff when I left were doing everything they could to eliminate Macintoshes from the district, ignoring anybody with any other ideas. They had a "one size fits all" philosophy which unfortunately made things a little more difficult for classrooms needing Macs because of their strengths (desktop publishing, media). The Technology Department's tactics were not all together above board in accomplishing its goal of Dells in every classroom. There was a Journalism department that was given the choice of a classroom of older Macs culled from around the district or a roomful of new Dells. All of the high school principals were given new Dell laptops to use. Talk to staff around the district and I'm sure you could hear more stories.

Probably the big thing is where their Director of Technology stands, if they
have one. If he/she is anti-mac, forget about it. Which brings me to my next
question, who takes care of technology at the local school districts? I have
heard that Urbandale has 1500 Macs, but you'd be hard pressed to know this.
Is it a situation where teachers are enlisted in taking care of the
technology? If that's the case, it's a shame. With out pro Mac techs working
for districts, it will be harder to keep that technology there or introduce
it.
