[ciapug] Hello...and what time is Monday's meeting?

Yes, I work on the Drake web site.

I do a lot of networking and I get jobs by word of mouth. I developed Ed
Fallon's campaign database and user interface. He was director of 1000
Friends of Iowa for a long time and I do their web site. I was on the
Executive Board for Des Moines Neighbors for 3 years and I do their web
site. I was an officer in the AFSCME Union for several years and I did
their web site for a long time. I've been on the State Platform Committee
of the Iowa Democratic Party for the past ten years, so I get referrals
through them from time to time. I'm also involved in the marijuana law
reform movement and I've got lots of court cases with my name on them, which
gives me instant notoriety in lots of places. I've got more work than I can
handle and I don't charge enough to pay for it, but I do get paid for some
of it. I also picked up a regular contract job just from posting to this
list. I do the web site for the ACLU of Iowa. It just goes on and on.

Network, network, network! I enjoy it, so I'm not sure I would do it just
to get work. The social interaction and the work go together.

Yes, Drake paid for my copy of Zend Studio.

Carl

Nifty. You work on the Drake web site, I presume?

How do you find such work? Word of mouth/networking? I've not seen
that the contracting/recruiting firms I'm working with (Robert Half,
Paragon, Palmer, etc) look for such things, but perhaps I missed that.

I know that one or more of the local developer UGs does pro bono work
for non-profits, too. That's something I'm going to look at for
"experience" as well. Plus it's nice to "give back", especially in a
way that benefits both parties. Can't beat that!

Ouch....unless you work for a company. At least many of the
developer tool companies have a free version and a $$$ pro version,
like Microsoft's VS Express you pointed me to. Of course, with Linux
and Mac OS X having plenty of developer goodness built in...
