Simple Machines Forums are the most customizable, free forums out  
there. Lots of features, almost all of which can be enabled/disabled  
by choice. If you're looking for more than a bare bones threaded  
system and want rock solid code with no security holes. (PHPBB is the  
most insecure forum software on the net for ANY language and platform)
