Well, for starters you could point out the performance aspect. As we all 
know, PHP will run great on even very meager hardware, which isn't 
something CF can claim. PHP beats Java for raw performance by most 
benchmarks I've seen... and CF runs as a layer on top of Java, so it's 
going to have even more overhead.

PHP is just about ubiquitous - you can get PHP on just about any of the 
cheap web hosting services, and it will run on just about any of the 
popular web servers on several platforms.

Setting up a LAMP server is very simple these days - and most Linux 
distributions come with just about everything you'll need "out of the 
box" - for *free*. How much did that CF software cost? And how long did 
it take to configure?

PHP handles high traffic web sites well. A lot of Java / CF advocates 
will tell you that PHP doesn't scale - but they usually site some Java 
marketing-speak, but can't give you any *real* answers.

Of course - as with any application, it has to be well-written. I've 
heard that one of the more popular PHP forum systems fall down badly 
when you subject them to high loads - this isn't the fault of PHP, but 
because of some bad coding / database work.

PHP5 has much better OO capabilities, and you should be able to do 
anything with it you can with CF.
