Tim,
You have to understand I have a history of giving Chris a hard time about his
web sites. He knows full well I think he's an excellent designer/developer.
Ever seen the work he did for EFR? That was awesome. I just like to jab him
once in a while, and occasionally he comes up with a return jab.
As for obscure OS/browser, Linux and FireFox both qualify under that statement.
;)
At any rate, ripping aside, I do wholeheartedly believe in web standards and I
will advocate for them at all times. It's the web developers who have always
dictated what browser the public should use. Think back to the original browser
wars and how that whole fight went. If no one stands up now to improve the web
again, preferring instead to succumb to the Microsoft monopoly, things will
never improve.
I have a friend who uses assistive devices to browse the web. Watching him go
through some of my sites, which were table-based, and the sites of some popular
companies, it finally struck home with me how important those standards are. If
you ever get the opportunity to do that, please do it. There is literally
nothing worse for these people than complex nested table layouts. Not even an
embedded Violent Femmes MP3 playing in a loop.
Shortly after that, I helped out on a web project for the State of Iowa.
Government agencies are required to build Bobby compliant sites for
accessibility. I learned a lot on that project.
