I haven't looked into the apache-ssl.org thing, or instantssl.

The reason that Verisign and Thawte are the same price is because they 
are the same company. One of those markets where the biggest player 
ended up buying all the competition. Sound familiar to any other company?

Verisign also runs the "internic" domain registration. They're not as 
big as MS, but they have just as much of a stranglehold on the market.
