My opinions:
1) Can it be made secure enough?  Probably, but the more "plugins" you
enable, you QUICKLY introduce almost exponentially larger attack surfaces.
2) Better alternatives? Probably. if you dont need database access, almost
any of the "static site generators" would be more secure almost by default.
Something like this: https://www.netlifycms.org/ might be a good option.
