About the only thing I still really like about it is the unlimited full-size photo storage that was included with the Pixel/Pixel XL (original, version 1) phones. This was a free phone due to a warranty battery issue with my Nexus 6P. Even when the Pixel XL was new (before getting P on my phone), I overall preferred the Nexus 6P. Oh, and the Pixel/2/3 series is very ugly compared to the 6P :-) [Sent via Pixel XL] ________________________________ From: Cialug on behalf of Andrew Denner Sent: Sunday, December 16, 2018 2:49:47 AM To: Central Iowa Linux Users Group Subject: Re: [Cialug] Ping! We also have classes about once a month, Jim Kraii is doing the class on 1/19 on "Stabilizing Coatings", using resins with wood or rock. -dc On Wed, Dec 19, 2018 at 7:02 PM chris rheinherren wrote: > I can't make this today. I recently applied the latest updates to a CentOS 7 vm installed on my Mac under VirtaulBox (forget the version). I also updated the VB Additions. During the VB Additions update, there was an error. When I rebooted the vm, the screen resolution was maxxed out at about 1024x768. Digging in the logs, there was an "invalid parameter" in the kernel headers while trying to compile the video module for the VB Additions. I suspect either a C7 update or the new Additions are busted. I'm going to hold out and see if the next update cycle fixes it. Otherwise I will probably switch to a different distro. I did finally get the extensions to work on 5.1.38 (windows 10), apparently I missed a reboot of the vm somewhere during the process. Now that I have a base VM that works I need to get gnome to run at 2560x1440 and have the window automatically resize. I'll see if I can get dconf-editor loaded and tweak gnome. Maybe later I'll try moving this vm into VB 6.0.0... Maybe I'm a little rusty, but I don't remember VB being such a challenge. :) Dave On Fri, Dec 21, 2018 at 9:53 PM kristau wrote: > I just upgraded from Virtual Box 5.2.22 to 6.0.0 and upgraded the VB > tools on my C7 vm to the 6.0.0 version. Message-ID: I did get Centos 7 to with function correctly with VB as a guest Vm. Here's the process: Install VB 6.0 on a windows 10 host. Create a new VM using the osboxes Centos 7 image yum install kernel-headers, kernel-develop & gcc reboot yum update reboot install VB guest editions reboot Its looks like there are some issues with the VB guest additions with Centos 7 for any version of VB < 5.1.30 Its a little painful getting started. You couldn't see the mouse cursor with the VM using the base image. Even with the mouse captured, it wouldn't function correctly until the guest editions were installed. I ended up having to use the keyboard to navigate. You might have better luck starting with a fresh image rather than using a pre-made image. Looks like I can stick with Centos for a while. However, with Ubuntu there was a lot less pain. In the future I'm probably going to take a hard look at Ubuntu LTS. Its desktop functions, are clearly a couple of steps beyond Centos. I think still that Centos is probably superior on the server side. Ubuntu LTS certainly is a contender, especially if you want to have a machine for development that use same platform that you run on. The advantage would be that Ubuntu is less painful on the development side. :) Dave -- NIFCAP -The Premier Client Intake System for Non-Profit Organizations. When there's a *lot* that dumps out, it can be a pain to find the last prompt. This is a simple example, so yes 'less' would work. I would like 'lock screen, scroll at leisure' to work as well. And while we're on it, some key combo or click thing to jump up and down from prompt to prompt. That'd be nice. > > With respect to Bash, the idea this thread began with, first of all. Run a command, it outputs, then some symbol or parameter that stood in for the contents of the output of the last command. I want to, say, 'ls', and then 'grep blah ${variable} | another_command'. After the fact. Or run a command, get output, return to prompt, and then use the keyboard to jump between fields of the previous output, and when I hit Enter it enters whatever field I was on onto the current command line. Something like 'yank'* but without having to specify it beforehand. *https://github.com/mptre/yank > > Also, HISTIGNORE should have a way of respecting a list of commands. If I want to HISTIGNORE all uses of 'ls', and I run "ls; rm ./file", it definitely should not ignore that. Either don't ignore it at all, or ignore just the ls part, or something. > > And I'd like history to go to syslog, be immutable, etc. That's not impossible, of course. But it's certainly not the default. One would just have to do the setup. It'd be nice to record the command line that was entered, the directory it was run in, the user, the timestamp, the actual command line run after alias expansion, parameter expansion, etc and so on. Aha! I just found something kind of like this, called: SCM Breeze: https://github.com/scmbreeze/scm_breeze The README is kind of confusing, but it's implementing something kind of like what I was describing above, with running a command, seeing the output, and *then* being able pull in parts of that output for further processing, without having to know ahead of time that you're going to do that. Seems interesting. I haven't tried it yet. -- Todd From staticphantom at gmail.com Fri Dec 28 15:22:38 2018 From: staticphantom at gmail.com (Will) Date: Fri, 28 Dec 2018 10:22:38 -0500 Subject: [Cialug] Bash or Terminal Output In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Please let me know if I missed the key points of this email thread. But if someone wants to lock screen scrolling and needs additional parsing help, I can help but to wonder if a combination of tools like screen, grep, awk, tee, and/or tail would be beneficial. The tools mentioned help me with my kubernetes clusters for work in addition to looking at the outputs of my own programs to snipe particular issues. -Will On Fri, Dec 28, 2018, 10:13 Todd Walton On Mon, Jul 30, 2018 at 9:54 AM Todd Walton wrote: > > > > On Thu, Jul 26, 2018 at 11:43 AM, Kyle H wrote: > >> > >> What do you want to change?
