Why not give something like FreeNAS a try? It's not Linux based but FreeBSD
but it sounds really cool. It should run on any relatively recent PC
hardware, although from what I hear it's happier with the more memory that
you give it.

For extra geek cred set up a Ceph cluster in your basement!
